I was at Knox Theological College at a time when we were funded to do a 3 year theology degree as part of our formation for ministry. That was both a wonderful privilege and deeply formative experience. Charismatic renewal was in full swing and created interesting dynamics in the student teacher relationships. Classrooms were full, discussions vibrant and deep friendship were forged. One of the most memorable parts of this experience for me was that is was a time of increasing contact with Holy Cross. I was involved in arranging a variety of sporting fixtures. Most of these went well and they were helpful in creating a good connection between the colleges. However, I do remember a rugby game where I had convinced a Knox student to play prop against his wife’s better judgement. He was scrummaging against a senior rugby player on the Holy Cross side who managed to break our man’s ribs in the first scrum. The game continued but not without an ambulance arriving to take him to hospital and his wife’s ‘told you so’ looks cast in my direction. It was hard to concentrate on the game at hand, needless to say we lost that game!
