Event Information

Theology Programme Otago University and KCML Summer School 2027

Taught by Prof Ellen Davis as an intensive, 1-5 February 2027 in Dunedin.

Ellen is the Amos Ragan Kearns Distinguished Professor of Bible and Practical Theology at Duke Divinity School (Durham, North Carolina).

Ellen is an outstanding Old Testament scholar and the author of twelve books and many articles, including Getting Involved with God: Rediscovering the Old Testament (2001), Preaching the Luminous Word (2016), and Opening Israel’s Scriptures (2019). Her latest book, Light within Light: Psalms and the Arts of Insight, co-written with Makoto Fujimura and Shai Held, is forthcoming from Baylor University Press in 2026.

Ellen is a lay Episcopalian, she has long been active as a theological consultant within the Anglican Communion.

Studying for Credit

To enrol for credit go to https://www.otago.ac.nz/courses/subjects/theology and click on ‘Apply to Enrol’. The paper reference for enrolment is “PAST 307 / MINS 405 The Luminous Word: Exegesis for Spiritual Growth, Preaching, and Pastoral Ministry.”

Studying for Audit

The course can also be taken for audit for $600 through the Knox Centre for Ministry and Leadership (KCML).

Subsidies for PCANZ Ministers

For Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa NZ (PCANZ) ministers (in good standing) studying for audit or credit, a 75% subsidy for the course fees and a travel subsidy is available. An application for both subsidies can be accessed via the following link(s): Study Grant & Travel Grant expense claim form.

These grants will not be paid until the event has commenced and your attendance confirmed. 

Travel subsidy

The travel subsidy is based on your geographical location – please refer below to find the level of grant available to you prior to submitting your application. 

  • Otago (more than 100km from Dunedin), Southland, Canterbury: $250
  • Top of South Island and West Coast: $350
  • North Island: $500
